About the USBC

The USBC is a national mission-driven coalition of ~140 organizations representing nonprofits, breastfeeding coalitions, federal agencies, and businesses working at national, state/territorial, tribal, local, and community levels to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding/human lactation. We use an equity-centered collective impact approach to facilitate multisectoral collaborations and drive collaborative efforts for policy and practices that create a landscape of breastfeeding support across the United States. That mission is in service to our vision of thriving families and communities. The USBC coordinates a year-round virtual learning collaborative, annual virtual membership meetings, and an annual conference and convening for USBC’s network of member organizations, state, tribal, local, and cultural breastfeeding coalitions, and allied public health partners committed to the importance of breastfeeding and increasing access to human milk.

About Your New Job

The Executive Director embodies our values of leadership, integrity, and inclusion. They will report directly to the USBC Board of Directors and are responsible for leading and overseeing all aspects of the USBC portfolio of work, including the organization's strategic direction, program development, daily operations, and achievement of financial objectives. This position serves as a public face of the organization, advocating and collaborating closely with the board, staff, partners, and supporters to advance the USBC mission and impact. The Executive Director will lead the dedicated, all-virtual staff team, prioritizing a positive work culture where all employees have opportunities to develop and apply new skills, independently shape and implement equity-focused initiatives, and build partnerships with broad and diverse community stakeholder groups. The Executive Director will manage an annual budget of approximately $1 million.

This is a full-time, salaried exempt position that requires a commitment of 40 hours per week with some required evening and weekend commitments. This position is remote, with occasional in-person engagement at USBC and external events. USBC will accept applications for this position until Friday, April 5, at 5 p.m. ET. Job Description

Fundraising & Financial Management (estimated 40% of the role)

  • Ensure the overall financial health of the organization by maintaining and improving financial policies and procedures; creating an annual budget in collaboration with the Executive Staff Team, Finance & Audit Committee, and accountant; and monitoring and reporting on financial performance and position.
  • Manage and maintain financial records and reports, insurance coverage, compliance with government registrations, filings, and tax requirements, and oversee audits.
  • Oversee the research, design, and implementation of best practices and innovative strategies to grow and diversify membership and establish strategic partnerships.
  • Secure grants and foundation funding, lead implementation of required deliverables, and ensure all grant deadlines are met.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with funders and foundations to ensure that USBC is well-represented and work to secure diverse funding streams.
  • Participate in Sustainability staff team meetings, and on the Sustainability and Vitality (fundraising) Committee to support the cultivation of donors and generate organizational revenue.

 

Operational Leadership (estimated 35% of the role)

  • Oversee all the operations of the organization to ensure compliance with organizational bylaws, federal and state requirements, and nonprofit best practices, providing direction to support the growth and well-being of the organization within the fiscal constraints of the budget.
  • Work with the Board of Directors and relevant committees to develop and maintain governance policies that advance and sustain the USBC mission and programs. 
  • Collaborate closely with the Board of Directors to ensure the advancement of strategic priorities, ongoing programmatic excellence, and consistent quality of finance, administration, fundraising, communications, and systems.
    • Provide regular updates and reports.
    • Facilitate board meetings, committees, and governance processes.
    • Support an ethical nomination and election process.
    • Attentively recruiting, onboarding, and training new board members.
  • Lead and oversee the USBC staff team:
    • Recruit, hire, and mentor a robust staff team equipped to advance the USBC mission and achieve funded deliverables.
    • Oversee the work of staff directors (and other staff, interns, and contractors as needed).
    • Encourage staff commitment to the vision and mission of the organization.
    • Foster a collaborative and psychologically safe work environment that values diversity, equity, and inclusion.
    • Ensure appropriate job descriptions and personnel practices are in place.

Strategic Leadership (estimated 15% of the role)

  • Lead development and implementation of all aspects of the structure, function, and strategic planning of the organization.
  • Maintain a deep understanding of trends and challenges in infant nutrition security, particularly among those impacted by marginalization and disparate health outcomes.
  • Establish and maintain evaluation and reporting best practices to demonstrate organizational impact and opportunities for growth.

 

Partnership & Programming (estimated 10% of the role)

  • Develop and sustain strong working relationships with government agencies, key congressional allies, organizational stakeholders, and funders developing strategic partnerships to advance the USBC mission.
  • Work with the board, staff, and stakeholders to address needs and increase the impact of the USBC membership, growing USBC's reach, impact, contributions, and sustainability.
  • Represent USBC at virtual and in-person events, conferences, and partner initiatives, providing authentic and effective leadership within and across the First Food field.
  • Work with the staff team to support the USBC Collective Impact efforts, serving as a resource for USBC-affiliated Constellations (action-focused workgroups) to achieve shared goals, facilitating and supporting collaboration among USBC members, staff, Board of Directors, and other partners.
  • Work across multiple issues to advance policy, system, and environmental changes that create a landscape of breastfeeding support across the United States, effectively engaging coalition partners, donors, supporters, and policymakers.

 

Job Location & Technology Requirements

This is a remote/work-from-home position with occasional travel. You'll need fast and reliable internet service, and the USBC will provide a PC laptop loaded with needed software.

Top candidates for this position will have experience in the following:

    • A strong commitment to breastfeeding and human milk feeding that encompasses broader domains of maternal and child health, reproductive justice, public health, and the USBC mission, vision, and values.
    • A strategic thinker who can develop and implement long-term plans and goals for growing impact, including strategic planning.
    • Strong organizational development skills.
  • Equity
    • Demonstrated ability and commitment to applying a strong lens of equity-centered values to their work, including building and sustaining a diverse and inclusive workplace and stakeholder network, and supporting equity-centered movements.
  • Fundraising & Financial Management
    • Strong business acumen with experience overseeing financial management, including budget development and accountability measures.
    • A track record of successful fundraising and enthusiasm for fundraising and external relations, including demonstrated ability to identify and solicit major individual and institutional gifts and securing and managing grants.
  • Operational Leadership
    • Proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience in the nonprofit sector, overseeing operational, fiscal, personnel management, and establishing fair and legally compliant accountability and performance measures.
    • An understanding of nonprofit governance with a proven track record of leading with integrity, and maintaining high levels of trust with the staff, board, members and constituents, donors, and community.
    • Deep commitment and track record of mentorship, personnel development, and leadership development, with the ability to coach, manage, and develop high-performing teams and set and achieve strategic objectives.
  • Partnership & Programming
    • Solid sense of accountability, integrity, and ability to handle highly visible responsibilities where people are counting on a great show-up.
    • Strong relationship-building skills with government agencies, allies, stakeholders, and funders.
    • Experience in legislative advocacy and policy work, as well as an understanding of systems change.
    • Ability to represent the organization at events and conferences.
    • Experience in collective impact efforts and coalition building.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Salary Range - $110,000 to $130,000/year
